The MGA name was coined by the head of the MG Car Company, John Thornley and was so named as it was considered the first of a new line of MGs. The MGA was produced in Abingdon, England from 1955 and 1962 and replaced the MG TF 1500 Midget. More than 100,000 MGAs were sold with the majority being exported. The car was available both as a roadster and a coupe, although the coupe proved more popular for racing.
The MGA was raced successfully in the U.S. since its introduction. In Sports Car Club of America competition, the MGA won numerous regional and national championships. It has also been a favourite choice of those competing in vintage racing.
