1965 Racing MGB Roadster Iris

This illustration shows a 1965 chrome-bumper roadster with wire wheels and a hard top that has been modified for racing with the inclusion of a roll cage, racing numbers and a fire extinguisher inside.

The MGB is probably the most ubiquitous british sports car ever made and remains one of the most popular classic cars. Built from 1962 to 1980 in Abingdon, England, the car replaced the MGA and was MG’s first foray into the now-common monocoque construction.

More than 500,000 MGBs were sold with the majority being exported. Both roadsters and coupes (named the MGB-GT) were produced and used the tried and tested B-series engine.

There were three major revisions to the model with the most obvious happening in 1976 when the chrome bumpers were replaced with plastic (but named rubber) bumpers to comply with US legislation.

MGBs have a rich racing history and competed in iconic races such as the Sebring 12 hour race as well as the Le Mans 24 hour race. MGBs are still popular with classic racers today.
