The Mini was arguably the most influential British car of the 20th century. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and launched in 1959, the mini was in production for over 40 years. In the wake of the Suez crisis in 1956, the market for German bubble cars increased dramatically but Leonard Lord, the head of the British Motor Corporation, hated them so much he laid down the basic specification for the Mini. From being a small shopping trolley type of car, the mini became the choice of celebrities all over the world, and its popularity in the classic car world remains to this day.
This illustration shows the 1987 Mini Advantage LE, which was launched in France in May 1987 for the French Open tennis championship. Diamond White paintwork, grey trim and the green and grey 'Tennis Net' interior. In total, 4,677 were produced, costing new in 1987 £4,286.
