The MGB finished production in 1980 when the Abingdon factory closed. However, British Leyland and later Rover recognised the value of the brand, so in 1992 the MG RV8 was introduced.
Developed by Rover Special Products under the codename “Project Adder”, the car was based on the original MGB bodyshell made by British Motor Heritage. It featured additional bodywork to allow a wider track and larger wheels. The interior was completely revised, and the front suspension was improved with modern telescopic dampers, although the leaf spring rear suspension was retained.
The performance from the 3.9 litre Rover V8 was excellent, accelerating the car from 0-60 in 6.9 seconds and powering on to a top speed of 135mph. The car became very popular in Japan, and almost all the production was exported there, although many have been reimported to the UK.
This illustration shows an RV8 finished in Old English White with Stone Beige interior trim.
